Vinted Scams UK: How Sellers Can Protect Themselves

A practical UK seller-safety guide to Vinted phishing, fake payment links, off-platform messages, disputes, returns and safer selling habits.

Updated October 2026. Most Vinted transactions do not need drama, but sellers should know the difference between Vinted’s real processes and a message designed to move them outside the platform. This guide focuses on practical precautions without treating every buyer dispute as a scam.

The safest starting rule

Keep the transaction inside Vinted. Be cautious if somebody asks you to move to WhatsApp, email or another payment route, or sends an external link supposedly needed to “receive” your money. Use the app/site directly rather than a link in an unexpected message.

Red flags and what to do

Red flagSafer response
Buyer asks for your email/card details to release paymentDo not provide them; check the transaction directly in Vinted
Message contains an external “payment confirmation” linkDo not use the link; open Vinted independently
Request to complete payment outside VintedDecline and keep the transaction on-platform
Unexpected request for sensitive verification informationCheck Vinted Help and access any genuine verification through your account
Buyer reports a problem after deliveryUse the formal order conversation/refund process and provide accurate information

Phishing and fake Vinted messages

A fake message may imitate Vinted and try to collect login or banking information. Do not judge authenticity only by a logo or urgent wording. Navigate to Vinted yourself and check whether the same action appears in your account.

What about QR-code scams?

QR codes can be legitimate parts of shipping, so “QR code = scam” is bad advice. The distinction is context. Use shipping codes generated inside the genuine Vinted order. Be suspicious of unsolicited codes or links sent by another user that claim you must enter payment details to receive money.

Buyer disputes are not automatically scams

Vinted’s Buyer Protection allows qualifying buyers to report that an order did not arrive, arrived damaged or was significantly not as described. Vinted says buyers normally have two calendar days from its notification that an order should have arrived or seems lost to report an issue. A legitimate dispute should not be labelled fraud simply because the seller disagrees.

Returns and “empty box” stories

You may see anecdotal posts claiming buyers routinely return an empty box or different item. Treat these as allegations unless supported by evidence in the individual case. Vinted’s current refund policy says returned items must be in the same condition as reported and include relevant accessories, tags or labels. Use Vinted’s dispute process if a returned parcel genuinely does not match what was expected.

Should you video yourself packing?

Some seller communities recommend recording high-value packing. We have not found an official Vinted rule requiring every seller to film packing, so do not present this as mandatory protection. More basic evidence matters too: accurate listing photos, a clear description, tracked/integrated shipping where required and proof of handover.

Before-you-post checklist

  • Photograph the actual item and any flaws clearly.
  • Make sure brand, size and condition are accurate.
  • For valuable branded goods, retain legitimate proof of authenticity/purchase if available.
  • Pack appropriately for the item.
  • Use the shipping route shown for the order.
  • Keep proof of drop-off until the transaction is complete.
  • Keep communication in Vinted.

If something goes wrong

Use the order conversation and Vinted support/refund process. Do not send additional money or sensitive details because someone threatens account closure in a private message. If you believe your account has been compromised, secure the associated email account as well and use Vinted’s official account/support routes.
