Last updated: 21 October 2026.

This guide explains sainsbury's £3 fruit and veg in plain English, with the practical checks to make before changing your household budget.

Quick answer: Sainsbury’s is giving families on the NHS Healthy Start scheme an extra £3 a week for six weeks, up to £18 in total, to spend on fruit, veg, beans and pulses. It is not automatic. You must register by 11:59pm on Monday 9 November 2026. You also need to have used your Healthy Start card and your Nectar card together at Sainsbury’s in the last 12 months. The £3 eGift cards arrive by email weekly from 18 November, and each one has to be used within 7 days.

Fruit and vegetables for the Sainsbury’s Healthy Start top-up guide

You might have seen this called “Sainsbury’s £3 fruit and veg rule” in the news. It isn’t a rule for all shoppers. It’s a top-up for families who already get Healthy Start. Below I’ve explained who can get it, exactly how to sign up, and the small print that could stop you getting the full £18.

What is the Sainsbury’s £3 fruit and veg top-up?

Sainsbury’s announced the offer on 20 October 2026 (Sainsbury’s press release). It’s paid on top of your normal Healthy Start money, not instead of it.

Who qualifies for the Sainsbury’s Healthy Start top-up?

You need to tick all three of these:

  1. You get NHS Healthy Start and live in England, Wales or Northern Ireland.
  2. You’ve shopped at Sainsbury’s in the past 12 months.
  3. You used your Healthy Start card and your Nectar card in the same transaction. This is how Sainsbury’s links your Nectar account to Healthy Start. If you’ve always paid with your Healthy Start card but never scanned Nectar, you may not show as eligible.

Scotland: Scotland isn’t included, because Scottish families get Best Start Foods instead of Healthy Start.

How to claim your £18: step by step

  1. Have your Nectar card number and the email address linked to your Nectar account ready.
  2. Go to Sainsbury’s Healthy Start sign-up page: sainsburyshealthystart.argosrewards.co.uk. It’s an Argos Rewards address, because Argos is part of Sainsbury’s, so don’t be put off.
  3. Fill in your details and submit before 11:59pm on 9 November.
  4. From 18 November, look out for an email with your £3 eGift card each week. Check your spam folder and add the sender to your contacts.
  5. Use each card within 7 days, in store or online, on fruit, veg, beans or pulses.

You can read the full terms on Sainsbury’s Healthy Start page.

The small print that could cost you

  • You can’t save the cards up. Each £3 has a 7-day window. If you only shop every fortnight, plan a quick top-up shop so you don’t lose one.
  • It’s only for certain foods. Fresh, frozen, tinned and dried fruit and veg, beans and pulses. Do not assume every product containing beans qualifies; check the offer terms for exclusions. Check the T&Cs if you’re unsure about things like fruit juice or ready-chopped veg.
  • Missing the deadline means missing out. Registration closes on 9 November, before the first card even arrives. That’s the step most people will miss.

What is Healthy Start, and could you be missing it?

Healthy Start is an NHS scheme that puts money on a prepaid card every 4 weeks for milk, fruit, veg, pulses and infant formula. From 6 April 2026 the amounts are (source):

WhoPer week
Pregnant (from 10 weeks)£4.65
Each child under 1£9.30
Each child aged 1 to 4£4.65

You also get free Healthy Start vitamins. You may qualify if you’re more than 10 weeks pregnant or have a child under 4, and you get certain benefits, such as Universal Credit below an earnings limit. Lots of eligible families never apply. Check on the official NHS Healthy Start website.

If you are new to Healthy Start, apply for the NHS support if you qualify. Do not assume a new application or a shop today will qualify you for this separate Sainsbury’s promotion: check its eligibility cut-off and terms first.

How I’d make £3 of fruit and veg go furthest

  • Go frozen: frozen peas, sweetcorn, mixed veg and berries don’t go off before you use them, and they count.
  • Tins and dried pulses: chickpeas, lentils and kidney beans stretch a family meal for pennies.
  • Loose over packed: buy exactly what you need.
  • Check the reduced section: yellow-sticker fruit and veg is still fruit and veg.

Last checked: 21 October 2026 against Sainsbury’s announcement. Offer terms can change, so always check Sainsbury’s T&Cs before relying on them.

What I’d do first before registering

Open the sign-up link from Sainsbury’s announcement rather than an advert or an unsolicited message. Check which email address belongs to your Nectar account and have your account details ready. The official announcement describes a qualifying transaction using both cards; do not assume a recent NHS application, or using Nectar on its own, makes you eligible for this separate promotion.

2. Keep the weekly spending plan simple

Write a short list of eligible foods your household will actually eat. Check the fridge, freezer and cupboard before deciding what to buy. Frozen vegetables and plain pulses can be useful where the terms allow them, but the offer is not a reason to buy something that will go unused. Ask the retailer if a particular prepared or mixed product qualifies instead of guessing from its name.

3. Avoid spending extra to use a small reward

Plan redemption around an existing shopping trip where possible. Compare the extra journey, delivery charge or additional purchases with the value of the gift card. If an email does not arrive, check your inbox and spam folder and use Sainsbury’s own support route. Keep confirmation of registration, but do not send card details to anyone claiming they can speed up the reward.
