How this grocery savings calculator works
It starts with your weekly shop and applies four habits in turn: cutting top-up shops, wasting less, swapping brands and using loyalty prices. Each saving is applied to the remaining budget. This limits simple double counting but cannot remove every overlap: if you already buy an own-brand item at a loyalty price, do not count both discounts against the same original spend. Defaults are editable examples, not a promise of savings.
The four habits, explained
1. Own-brand swaps
Try the supermarket’s own version of a few things you buy every week. If your family can’t tell the difference, keep the swap. If they can, go back. That’s the downshift challenge from my guide to cutting your grocery bill.
2. Loyalty prices
Compare loyalty prices with the price you would otherwise pay, including other shops and own-brand alternatives. A loyalty discount does not automatically make something the cheapest choice. Compare the schemes in my supermarket loyalty apps guide and Morrisons More vs Tesco Clubcard.
3. Wasting less
Use your own food-waste estimate; the starting values are illustrative, not measured savings for your household. Planning meals, checking the fridge before you shop and using leftovers are the cheapest saving there is, because you’ve already paid for the food.
4. Fewer top-up shops
Popping in for milk rarely ends with just milk. Skipping one top-up shop a week, or sending one person with a list, cuts the impulse buys.
