Last checked: 10 October 2026. Coffee shops and bakeries are the easiest place to start with birthday freebies in the UK. Most offers are a free cake, cookie or doughnut through an app you might already have. But “free” doesn’t always mean the same thing: some need no purchase at all, some need you to buy something else, and one needs about £250 of spending first. I’ve checked every offer below on the brand’s own website or app help pages, so you can see the catch before you make a special trip.
This is part of my UK birthday freebies guide. For the rest of your birthday month, see restaurant birthday freebies, beauty birthday freebies, fashion birthday discounts and kids’ birthday freebies.

Before your birthday: 4 quick checks
- Sign up early. M&S needs your birthday at least 35 days before. Others just need it in your profile before the day. A month ahead is a safe rule for all of them.
- Use your real date of birth. Costa only lets you change it once a year, and only to fix a mistake.
- Turn on marketing emails or app notifications where needed. Costa requires it. With the others, it’s how the reward reaches you.
- Check the expiry. Costa’s reward lasts 7 days and Caffè Nero’s 14. Put a reminder in your phone.
Free birthday treats with no purchase needed
1. Does Costa give you free cake on your birthday?
Yes. Costa Club gives you one free item from the sweet counter for your birthday: fresh cake, a muffin, pastry, traybake, cookie, bun or doughnut, subject to availability. Whole cakes and pre-packed snacks aren’t included.
The Costa Club terms say you need to use the app, have a valid date of birth on your account and agree to receive Costa marketing. The reward is emailed each year, can be used in participating Costa stores in Great Britain, and expires 7 days after it’s issued. You don’t have to buy anything else.
2. What does Greggs give you on your birthday?
Greggs adds a free sweet treat to your Greggs App wallet every year on your birthday. Its terms describe it as a single-serving item from the sweet range, such as a doughnut or cookie. Multipacks and punnets aren’t included. Show the reward in the app when you pay.
3. Does Caffè Nero give a free birthday treat?
Yes. The Caffè Nero app gives you a Birthday Treat voucher for one item from a list of baked goods, including cakes, cookies and madeleines. According to the Caffè Nero app help page (updated September 2026), you can only use it in store, not for in-app orders, and you have 14 days from when it’s issued. No purchase is mentioned.
4. Does Krispy Kreme give a free birthday doughnut?
Yes. Krispy Kreme Rewards members can pick up a free Original Glazed doughnut on their birthday. The page doesn’t give the claiming steps or how long you have, so check the reward in your app before you travel.
5. What is the M&S Sparks birthday treat?
If you’ve added your birthday to your M&S Sparks profile, a birthday treat appears in your account at the start of your birthday month. You choose from options such as cookies, Swiss chocolate truffles, Percy Pigs, flowers or a bottle of crémant. The key rule is timing: your birthday must be on your profile at least 35 days before. In September 2026, M&S said 60% of eligible September birthdays missed out because they hadn’t added it (Grocery Gazette, 21 September 2026).
Birthday treats that need a purchase or loyalty status
6. GAIL’s birthday treat: free with a purchase
GAIL’s loyalty members can choose a sweet treat from the Baker’s Table during their birthday month. The GAIL’s rewards terms say it’s “with purchase”, so you need to buy something else in the same transaction. It’s one item from the morning goods or sweets and cakes range, with loaf cakes and boxes excluded, and you have 30 days from when the voucher is issued.
It’s worth having if you’d buy a coffee there anyway. I wouldn’t make a trip just for it.
7. Does Starbucks UK give a free birthday drink?
Only for Gold members. Starbucks Rewards UK lists a free birthday drink as a Gold benefit. Gold needs 2,500 Stars, and you earn 10 Stars per £1, so that’s about £250 of Starbucks spending first. If you’re a regular already, it’s a nice extra. If you’re not, it isn’t a freebie.
Birthday offers I couldn’t confirm
Other lists include birthday offers from Lidl Plus (a bakery item), Hotel Chocolat, Lindt, Boost, Muffin Break and Auntie Anne’s. I couldn’t find these on the brands’ own UK terms pages when I checked on 10 October 2026. Several also need a minimum spend. Rather than list something that might not be there, I’ve left them out. If you use any of these apps, check the rewards tab in the run-up to your birthday.
How to plan a birthday treat day without overspending
A free £3 cake isn’t a saving if you spend £6 on parking to get it. This is how I’d do it:
- Claim the no-purchase ones first: Costa, Greggs, Caffè Nero, Krispy Kreme and M&S.
- Group them into a trip you’re already making, such as the weekly shop or a school run through town.
- Check each app the morning you go. Rewards can be out of stock, or not accepted in some branches, such as stations, airports and concessions.
- Don’t spend to unlock a reward you didn’t want. GAIL’s and Starbucks only make sense if you already go there.
- Share the treats. On a family birthday, everyone in the house who has the apps gets their own treat in their own birthday month, which adds up over a year.
If you like stacking small wins like this, the same apps often send cashback and points offers too. My guide to the best cashback sites and apps in the UK shows how to earn on spending you’re already doing, and how to turn cashback into Amazon vouchers.
Watch out for fake birthday freebie messages
Scammers copy birthday offers because people expect them. Only claim rewards inside the brand’s own app or from a link you trust. A real coffee shop birthday reward never asks for your bank details or a payment to “release” a free cake. If a text or social media post promises something too generous, open the brand’s app yourself and check instead of clicking the link.
