Reusable Halloween costume ideas for kids, built from pieces they can wear again, are the best way I know to stop spending money on a costume that’s worn once and then lives at the bottom of a drawer. Instead of a full shop-bought outfit, you buy a few versatile pieces that mix into several different costumes, and then get worn for World Book Day, parties, dance class or just everyday play.
Below are 10 pieces, each with the costumes it makes and how it gets used after Halloween. At the end there’s a mix-and-match table so you can see how 3 or 4 pieces become a whole costume.
Prices on Amazon change all the time, so I haven’t listed them. Click through to check today’s price, and always check the size guide, since sizing varies a lot between brands.
Short on time? My top 3 picks
- A hooded black cape: it makes a vampire, witch, wizard or bat, then World Book Day. Check today’s price on Amazon (ad)
- A cat ears headband: add black clothes and it’s a whole cat costume. Check today’s price on Amazon (ad)
- A face paint kit: one kit covers every costume in the family. Check today’s price on Amazon (ad)
The idea: a “capsule” costume wardrobe
Most children’s Halloween costumes are built on the same base: plain black clothes. Add one or two pieces on top and you have a cat, a bat, a witch, a vampire or a skeleton. Swap the top piece and you have a different costume next year, or for a sibling.
The base pieces (wear them all year)
These are the foundation of almost every costume, and the pieces that get the most wear afterwards.
1. Plain black leggings or joggers
Halloween: the base for a cat, bat, spider, skeleton or witch.
After Halloween: PE kit, everyday wear, dance class, or under a skirt in winter. Multipacks are usually better value, and cotton with a little stretch lasts longest.

2. A plain black long-sleeved top
Halloween: pairs with the leggings for a complete black base. Add face paint or ears and you’re nearly done.
After Halloween: a layering top for school days and cold weekends. Buy it a size up if it’s going to be worn over other clothes.

3. Skeleton print pyjamas
Halloween: a ready-made skeleton costume. Add skeleton face paint and nobody will know they’re pyjamas. Glow-in-the-dark versions are popular with children.
After Halloween: they’re simply warm winter pyjamas, so the money isn’t wasted. Choose close-fitting, flame-resistant children’s nightwear sizes.

The costume-makers (the pieces that turn black clothes into a character)
4. A black tutu skirt
Halloween: witch, bat, spider, black cat or a “spooky ballerina”.
After Halloween: party outfits, dance practice and the dressing-up box. It works for lots of other characters, too, with a different top.

5. Striped tights
Halloween: black and white or black and orange stripes are instant witch legs, and great for a Beetlejuice-style or ragdoll look.
After Halloween: worn with skirts and dresses all winter. Check the size by age and height, not just age.

6. A hooded black cape
Halloween: vampire, wizard, witch, the Grim Reaper or a ninja.
After Halloween: wizard or villain for World Book Day, superhero play, nativity shepherd in a pinch. It’s probably the most versatile dressing-up piece you can own.

7. A cat ears headband (with or without a tail)
Halloween: black cat, with face-paint whiskers. Some sets include a bow tie.
After Halloween: World Book Day characters, animal-themed parties and everyday dressing-up. Headbands without wires are more comfortable for young children.

8. A witch or wizard hat
Halloween: witch or wizard, with the cape or tutu.
After Halloween: World Book Day is the big one: Room on the Broom, The Worst Witch and lots of other book characters wear a pointed hat. Felt hats keep their shape much better than card ones.

Finishing touches
9. An animal onesie
Halloween: a black cat, bat, dinosaur or dragon onesie is a whole costume on its own, and it’s warm for trick-or-treating on a cold night.
After Halloween: loungewear and sleepovers for the rest of the winter. Buy a size up if you want it to fit over clothes.

10. A face paint kit
Halloween: whiskers, skeleton faces, zombie grey, pumpkin cheeks. Face paint turns the simplest outfit into a costume.
After Halloween: parties, fetes and World Book Day. Choose a water-based kit made for children’s skin, and do a small patch test on the inside of the arm the day before.

Mix and match: 6 costumes from 10 pieces
| Costume | Pieces you need |
|---|---|
| Black cat | Black top, black leggings, cat ears, face paint whiskers |
| Witch | Black top, tutu, striped tights, witch hat, cape |
| Skeleton | Skeleton pyjamas, skeleton face paint |
| Vampire | Black top, black leggings or joggers, cape, pale face paint |
| Bat | Black top, tutu or leggings, cape (held out as wings), face paint |
| Wizard | Black top, joggers, cape, wizard hat, a stick from the park as a wand |
With siblings, the same pieces can make two different costumes: one child is a witch in the hat and tutu, the other is a vampire in the cape.
Costume safety: the important bit
- Keep children in costume away from candles and open flames, even if a label says “flame retardant”. Use LED tealights in pumpkins instead.
- Buy from known sellers, check the reviews, and look for the UKCA or CE mark and an age range on anything sold as a costume or toy.
- Make sure they can see. Avoid masks that cover the eyes; face paint is safer.
- Add something reflective or a glow stick to dark outfits for trick-or-treating.
What I’d do first
- Check what black clothes you already have before buying anything.
- Choose one “costume-maker” piece per child: a cape, hat, tutu or ears.
- Get one face paint kit for the whole family.
- Once Halloween is over, put it all in a dressing-up box ready for World Book Day.

Frequently asked questions
What is the cheapest way to make a Halloween costume?
Start with plain black clothes your child already owns, then add one inexpensive piece such as cat ears, a cape or a witch hat, plus face paint. It’s usually much cheaper than a full costume.
What Halloween costumes can be reused for World Book Day?
Witches, wizards, cats and many animal characters. A cape, witch or wizard hat, cat ears and face paint work for lots of book characters.
Are children’s Halloween costumes safe?
Buy from known sellers, check for the UKCA or CE mark, and always keep children in costume away from candles and naked flames. Choose face paint over masks so they can see properly.
What size should I buy Halloween costume pieces?
Go by your child’s height as well as age, and buy a size up for anything worn over clothes, such as a onesie or cape.

Summary
