How to Sell on eBay UK: From Your First Listing to Getting Paid

Your first eBay sale starts with an item you’re ready to part with. Here’s how to check its value, prepare the listing and handle postage and payment without guessing your costs.

By Dr Kalpana Govindaraasan · Updated 23 October 2026

You’ve found something you no longer use and think it could sell on eBay. But what should you charge, how much will postage cost and what happens after someone buys it?

Let’s take one item through the whole process, from checking comparable sales and photographing its condition to packing it and keeping your records. You’ll also know when selling your own belongings becomes a different question from buying stock to resell.

Pick something manageable for your first listing. Check that it works, find suitable packaging and weigh the packed parcel before choosing delivery. That avoids guessing your costs after the buyer has paid.

A useful distinction: clearing your own cupboards is different from buying items to resell as a business. Your eBay account type, platform fees and tax position need to reflect what you actually do. I’m not a financial adviser; the tax information here is general guidance.

Quick answers before your first listing

QuestionShort answer
Is selling free? Many ordinary UK private sales qualify, within the listing allowance; exceptions and optional charges apply.
Who pays delivery? It depends on the listing. Free postage to the buyer means the seller absorbs that cost.
Is collection possible?Yes, where offered. Record the handover using eBay’s collection-code process.
Does £1,000 of sales mean tax is due?Not automatically. Personal belongings and trading income are treated differently.

How to sell on eBay UK: beginner questions answered

1. How do I sell on eBay for beginners?

Choose one eligible item you own, understand and can pack or hand over safely. A straightforward first sale lets you learn the process without spending money on stock.

  1. Check the item. Test it where appropriate, clean it safely and list any defects or missing parts.
  2. Research the price. Search for the same model, size or edition. Where available, use sold and completed listing filters: an unsold asking price is not proof of value.
  3. Take your own photographs. Show the actual item, identifying details, accessories and faults. Avoid exposing private information in the background.
  4. Write a clear listing. Include the brand, model, size, condition and exactly what the buyer receives. Complete relevant item specifics.
  5. Choose the selling format. Use a fixed price when you know your acceptable amount; consider an auction when bidding suits the item. Do not start an auction below an amount you would be willing to accept.
  6. Set delivery accurately. Measure and weigh the packed item, review the options offered and choose a realistic handling time.
  7. Review costs and publish. Read the final listing screen before accepting upgrades.
  8. Check payment inside eBay. Follow the order status before dispatch or handover; an emailed screenshot is not sufficient.
  9. Complete the order. Follow its shipping or collection instructions and keep evidence until the transaction is resolved.

2. How do I create an eBay seller account in the UK?

Start on eBay’s own website or app. Sign in or register, begin the selling process and complete the identity and payout checks requested. Use accurate details and the appropriate private or business account type.

eBay’s seller-registration guidance explains verification and linking your bank account. Provide sensitive information through the genuine account flow, never through a buyer’s message. Resolve any verification request before relying on a payout. A new account can have selling limits, so the free-listing allowance is not a promise that you can immediately list that many items.

3. How do I sell on eBay UK for free?

For an eligible UK private sale, keep within the free-listing allocation, avoid unnecessary paid upgrades and review any overseas-delivery charges. This does not make packaging, postage, travel or your time free.

eBay’s private-seller fee page, checked on 23 October 2026, says UK private sellers generally pay no final value or regulatory operating fees on ordinary sales, excluding motors. Business selling and eBay Live have different fee rules.

Do not choose a private account merely to avoid business fees when you are actually trading. Check the fee summary for your listing rather than assuming “free selling” applies to every situation.

4. How much does it cost to sell on eBay in the UK?

Ordinary private selling and business selling need separate budgets:

SituationWhat to check
UK private seller, standard listings300 free listings monthly; additional listings are currently 35p each after that allowance.
Optional upgrades or advertisingAdditional charges can apply. Review before selecting them.
Vehicles, overseas delivery or eBay LiveSeparate charges or exceptions may apply.
Business sellingUse the business fee schedule for your category and account.
Delivery and suppliesAllow for labels you fund, packaging and any other fulfilment costs.

Recheck the current private-seller schedule before listing. A free-listing allowance is not a tax allowance or a restriction on how many belongings you may own.

5. Is it worth selling on eBay UK?

It can be worthwhile when there is demand for your item and the expected proceeds justify preparing the listing, packing and handling the order. It is less attractive when postage and effort absorb most of a low sale price.

Illustration: if an item sells for £25 and your own delivery, packaging and other costs total £6, you keep £19 before considering your time or any applicable tax. That is an assumed example, not an exact eBay fee calculation. For a clear-out, this releases value from belongings; it is not evidence of a repeatable profit-making business.

Set yourself a minimum worthwhile amount. Consider a bundle, local collection or a different route for items that do not justify individual listings. My Facebook selling guide explains a local-clear-out alternative.

6. What is the downside of selling on eBay?

The main drawbacks are time, uncertain demand, packing work, the risk of damage in transit and dealing with questions, returns or disputes. You also depend on marketplace policies and the payment process, so agreeing a sale is not the same as having withdrawable money in your bank.

Reduce avoidable problems by recording condition honestly, using suitable packaging and retaining order messages and dispatch evidence. Do not assume “no returns” wording removes every buyer remedy if the item is not as described. Read the applicable seller and buyer-protection rules for your account type.

7. How do I sell on eBay with collection only?

Choose collection in person in the listing’s delivery settings and make clear that the buyer must collect. Include practical information such as approximate location, item measurements and whether help will be needed to move it. Avoid publishing your full home address unnecessarily.

  1. Agree the collection arrangements through the order conversation.
  2. Check the genuine order and payment status.
  3. Allow the buyer to inspect the item at handover.
  4. Use eBay’s collection confirmation: scan the buyer’s QR code or enter the six-digit collection code as instructed.
  5. Confirm that the order reflects the collection and retain the record.

eBay’s collection guidance explains the process. Local collection is different from posting an order to a shop for the buyer to collect. Do not skip the handover record just because the person seemed trustworthy.

8. How does postage work when selling on eBay UK?

Check the delivery arrangement for the actual listing. For eligible private-seller items, eBay’s Simple Delivery guidance explains the prepaid label process and any category exceptions.

Weigh and measure the packed parcel before accepting a suggested size. Check the service, permitted contents and accessible drop-off locations. Under Simple Delivery, you can choose whether the buyer pays at checkout or you fund the standard label through free postage. The latter is a cost to you.

After the sale, obtain the label or code from the order and follow its instructions. Retain proof of acceptance. If a label or address is wrong, resolve it through eBay rather than following an unverified message asking you to post elsewhere.

9. Can I sell on eBay without a printer?

Often, yes. Simple Delivery offers printer-free options, but the procedure depends on the carrier. Use the code and location specified for your order; do not assume any parcel shop can print any label.

Check the available drop-off or collection arrangements before listing if you do not have a printer. You can find more detail in eBay’s current delivery instructions. You do not need to buy a label printer simply to test whether selling a few belongings suits you.

10. How do I sell on eBay without AI?

Write your own title and description using the item in front of you. List the actual brand, model, measurements, condition, included parts and known faults. You can prepare this text yourself and use manual entry where the listing tool offers it.

If a tool suggests text automatically, review it rather than accepting unsupported claims. Do not let a generated description invent a material, authenticity guarantee or working condition you have not checked. Clear, accurate information matters more than polished marketing language.

11. What does not sell well on eBay?

There is no universal list of items that never sell. The harder listings are often those with weak demand, high delivery costs relative to value, unclear condition or an asking price above what comparable buyers have paid.

Before listing, compare like-for-like completed results and look at how many ended unsold. A common item may still sell at a sensible total price; a supposedly collectable item may attract no interest. Do not mistake a high asking price for evidence of demand.

For an unsold item, improve the factual description and first photograph, then review price and delivery. Some belongings are better bundled, donated or recycled appropriately than repeatedly relisted at a cost.

12. Which is better for selling items: eBay or Vinted?

Choose by the item, delivery arrangements and likely buyers, rather than assuming one platform always pays more.

Your situationPractical comparison
Clearing ordinary clothesCompare the listing process, similar items, total buyer cost and convenient drop-off options on both.
Specialist model, edition or collectableCheck eBay’s sold results and relevant categories, then compare other suitable marketplaces.
Bulky itemCheck collection arrangements and current platform eligibility rather than assuming it can be posted.
Buying stock to resellCheck business-account requirements; do not operate through a private account to avoid rules.

Use my Vinted beginner guide for its current order and shipping process. If you list the same unique item in more than one place, keep availability updated so you do not sell it twice.

13. Do I need to tell HMRC if I sell on eBay?

Selling ordinary unwanted possessions is different from buying or making items to sell for profit. The latter is likely to be trading. HMRC’s online-income guidance says relevant trading income above £1,000 in a tax year needs reporting, with eligibility conditions and exceptions to consider.

The £1,000 figure refers to gross trading income, before expenses, across relevant activities. It is not a separate allowance for every website. Reporting income does not automatically mean tax is due. My trading allowance guide explains the distinction.

14. What happens if I sell items for more than £1,000 on eBay?

First ask what you sold and why. A clear-out producing £1,200 from ordinary personal belongings is not automatically £1,200 of trading income. Selling stock you bought to resell is a different activity.

For trading, the reporting check uses gross receipts, not your bank payout after platform charges. If you receive £800 from eBay trading and £400 from another trading activity, the combined figure is £1,200. Keep records and check your reporting obligation even if expenses leave a much smaller profit.

15. What is the maximum you can sell on eBay without paying tax?

There is no single eBay sales limit that decides everyone’s tax bill. Your activity, profit and wider circumstances matter. Do not apply the trading allowance to every personal-possession sale or assume all sales below a platform reporting threshold are tax-free.

Valuable personal possessions can involve Capital Gains Tax rules. If you are selling a valuable collection or asset, check HMRC’s specific guidance rather than relying on advice about ordinary wardrobe clear-outs. Use the HMRC checker and guidance for your circumstances.

16. How many items can you sell on eBay before HMRC is told?

Platform reporting is separate from tax liability. HMRC says the goods-sales exclusion from reporting applies when a seller makes fewer than 30 sales and receives less than €2,000 for those sales in a calendar year. Both conditions must hold. It is not “30 tax-free items”.

A platform reporting your information does not automatically create a tax bill. Conversely, a trading activity can need reporting even when you are below those platform thresholds. Calendar-year platform reports also differ from the UK tax year. See HMRC’s platform-reporting explanation.

17. How do I sell on eBay as a business?

If you buy or make items to resell, check the business-account requirements. eBay distinguishes casual clear-outs from business selling. Register the appropriate account, use the relevant fee schedule, keep records and understand your customer obligations.

Before buying stock, calculate purchase cost, platform charges, delivery, packaging, possible returns and the time needed. Start with a controlled test rather than assuming every item will sell at its asking price. My sole-trader registration guide covers a separate UK tax-registration step; choosing an eBay business account does not complete that for you.

18. How do I sell on eBay Live UK or run a live auction?

eBay Live is livestream shopping, including live auctions. It is different from creating a normal timed auction listing. Check eBay’s current seller onboarding and register your interest where offered; do not assume an ordinary seller account automatically includes broadcasting access.

Before buying equipment or stock, confirm your eligibility, category suitability and the specific Live selling fees. A regular auction is a simpler option to investigate if you only want to sell a few belongings without hosting a broadcast. Neither format guarantees competitive bidding or a minimum return.

Get your first eBay parcel ready before listing

Find packaging, check the item’s condition and weigh the parcel you would actually send. Then prepare clear photos, a description of any faults and the delivery details. The checklist below helps you catch missing information before a buyer places an order.

  • Item is eligible and accurately described.
  • Photographs show the actual item and faults.
  • Comparable sold results checked where available.
  • Account type and possible charges reviewed.
  • Packed dimensions, weight and delivery costs checked.
  • Collection or dispatch procedure understood.
  • Payment checked inside the platform.
  • Sale and cost records retained.

Start with one listing and assess the real return before committing to more. If you want to give the proceeds a purpose, follow my £1,000 emergency buffer guide. For other routes, see UK side-hustle ideas or the Etsy guide for qualifying original products.
