Last updated: October 2026 · What’s available on each service changes every year. I’ll update this guide when the Christmas TV schedules are announced.

There’s nothing cosier than a Christmas film with the family, a blanket and a big bowl of popcorn. And the good news? You can watch plenty of free Christmas films in the UK without signing up to another subscription. Between the free TV apps, the services you might already pay for, and a well-timed free trial, you can fill the whole of December for little or nothing.

In this guide I’ll show you where to watch Christmas films without paying extra, how the TV Licence rules work, and how to put together a budget family movie night that feels like a real treat.

Where to watch free Christmas films in the UK

These free apps all show Christmas films and specials, especially from late November onwards:

ServiceCostTV Licence needed?
BBC iPlayerFreeYes, for everything on iPlayer
ITVXFree with advertsOnly if you watch live TV
Channel 4Free with advertsOnly if you watch live TV
5 (formerly My5)Free with advertsOnly if you watch live TV
Freeview or Freesat channelsFree (no subscription)Yes, it’s live TV

Christmas is when the free channels pull out their big films and family specials, so check their Christmas schedules when they’re announced, usually in early December. Many films stay on catch-up for a while afterwards, so you don’t have to watch them on the day.

The TV Licence rules, quickly

  • You need a TV Licence to watch or record live TV on any channel or app.
  • You need one for anything on BBC iPlayer, live or on demand.
  • You don’t need one if you only watch on-demand programmes on other apps, like ITVX, Channel 4, 5, Netflix or Prime Video.

A colour TV Licence costs £180 a year from April 2026. If you already have one, all those free channels and iPlayer are part of what you’re paying for, so make the most of them.

Check what you already pay for

Before you sign up for anything new, look at the subscriptions you already have. Lots of families pay for Netflix, Prime Video, Disney+ or a broadband or mobile package that includes a streaming service, and forget to look for Christmas films there.

  • Search “Christmas” in each app. Most create a Christmas collection in November.
  • Check your phone or broadband deal. Some include a streaming service as a perk.
  • Prime members: Prime Video is included in Prime. Some films are included and others cost extra to rent, so check for the “Included with Prime” label before you press play.

If you’ve got a pile of subscriptions, my guide to cancelling subscriptions helps you decide what to keep.

Use a free trial (the smart way)

If there’s a film you really want that’s only on one service, a free trial can cover the whole Christmas holidays, if you time it right.

  1. Start the trial in mid-December, so it covers Christmas Eve to New Year.
  2. Set a phone reminder two days before it ends.
  3. Watch everything you want, then cancel if you don’t want to keep paying.
  4. Check you’re eligible. Most trials are for new members only.

For example, you can try Amazon Prime free (ad) if you’re eligible. It also gives you free delivery on Christmas shopping. My is Amazon Prime worth it guide explains what’s included.

Classic Christmas films to look out for

Here are some family favourites to search for. Where they’re showing changes every year, so check the free apps first, then the services you already have.

  • The Snowman
  • The Polar Express
  • Arthur Christmas
  • The Muppet Christmas Carol
  • The Grinch

For the whole family

  • Elf
  • Home Alone
  • Nativity!
  • Paddington 2
  • Klaus

For grown-ups after bedtime

  • Love Actually
  • The Holiday
  • It’s a Wonderful Life
  • Miracle on 34th Street

How to host a budget Christmas movie night

A movie night at home can cost much less than a cinema trip for the whole family, and it can feel just as special. Here’s how to make it an event.

1. Make it cosy

Pile up the cushions, dim the lights and get the blankets out. A soft Christmas fleece throw (ad) or some battery fairy lights (ad) can be used every year.

2. Do snacks the cheap way

  • Pop your own popcorn. A bag of popcorn kernels (ad) makes many bowls for much less than ready-made bags.
  • Hot chocolate bar: hot chocolate, a few marshmallows and a sprinkle of cinnamon.
  • Buy the big tub of sweets and share them out, rather than lots of small bags.
  • Use yellow-sticker treats from the supermarket that day. My grocery bill guide has more tips.

3. Add a little magic

  • Make paper “tickets” and let the kids be the usher.
  • Let a different person pick the film each night.
  • Wear Christmas pyjamas or jumpers.
  • Try a set of popcorn boxes (ad), or use washable bowls you already own. Check whether any boxes you buy are designed to be reused.

4. Make it a December tradition

Plan a film for each weekend in December, or a “12 films of Christmas” countdown. It’s a lovely free family tradition, and it gives everyone something to look forward to during a busy, expensive month.

Plan the rest of a budget Christmas
