How to Get an Energy Credit Refund UK (Email Template)

Learn how to get an energy credit refund in the UK, check your meter readings, use a copy-paste email and escalate a refusal or delay with your supplier.

To get an energy credit refund in the UK, check that your latest gas or electricity bill uses actual meter readings, then ask your supplier to return some or all of the credit. In Great Britain, suppliers should refund credit promptly unless they have reasonable grounds to retain it.

I found around £1,000 sitting in our energy account when I checked our Direct Debit. I had to follow up by email to recover the credit. If you’re checking what’s available for your Christmas budget, count a refund once it reaches your bank.

How to get an energy credit refund on an open account

1. Check your latest bill and meter readings

Download your latest statement. Look for the amount in credit, the bill’s end date and whether the closing reading is marked as actual or estimated. An app balance can include a recent payment while still missing charges for energy you’ve already used.

If a reading is estimated, submit a dated reading through your supplier’s official app or website and ask when the revised bill will be available. If you have a smart meter, check what the supplier actually used to bill you. Keep the reading confirmation or photo in case you need it later.

2. Decide how much credit you want back

Monthly Direct Debits can spread energy costs over the year. A balance can build when you use less energy and shrink when you use more. You can ask for a refund at any time, including before the autumn bill.

For example, if your updated bill shows £350 in credit and you want to leave £100 towards winter usage, ask for £250 back. The £100 is a choice in this example. Ask your supplier what it expects you to spend over the coming months if you’re unsure how much to leave.

Review the ongoing Direct Debit separately. A refund reduces the credit available for future bills, and your supplier may reassess your payment. Ask for the estimated usage, costs and balance behind any proposed change. My monthly budgeting guide can help you see what a higher payment would mean for the rest of your bills.

3. Use your supplier’s refund route

Where to start with three UK energy suppliers
SupplierWhere to check
Octopus EnergyUse the online dashboard refund route if you have an up-to-date statement based on a recent reading. Contact Octopus if the option is missing.
British GasLook for refund eligibility in the app or dashboard. The online route checks your payment method, billing readings and whether a Direct Debit is due soon.
E.ON NextUse billing and payments support to check the balance and submit an actual reading if your bill is estimated. Contact E.ON Next about the credit and confirm the refund method.

Copy-paste energy credit refund email

Send this through the supplier’s official contact channel. Use your account reference to identify the bill and ask how they can verify any further information securely.

Subject: Request for energy credit refund — account [reference]

Hello,

My latest energy statement dated [date] shows [£amount] in credit. The meter reading used was taken on [date]. Please refund [£amount] using your usual refund method and confirm when I should expect it.

If you’re keeping some or all of the credit, please explain why, how much you’re retaining and which readings, charges and forecast you used. Please also explain any proposed change to my monthly Direct Debit separately.

Thank you,
[Your name]

What to do if your supplier refuses or delays

Ask for its reasons in writing. If it refers to forecast winter use, ask for the estimate and whether a partial refund is possible. If the answer leaves the issue unresolved, use the supplier’s formal complaints process and ask for a reference number.

Keep the bill, meter readings, refund request and replies. In Great Britain you can take an unresolved complaint to the Energy Ombudsman after eight weeks, or sooner if your supplier sends a deadlock letter. In Northern Ireland, contact the Consumer Council for help with your complaint.

What if I’ve switched supplier or moved house?

Ask the old supplier for the final bill and check that it uses the closing reading. Credit left on a closed account is handled separately from an active account. Where the Great Britain guaranteed standard applies, the supplier must refund outstanding credit within 10 working days of issuing the final or corrected final bill.

If the deadline has passed, ask for the refund and whether compensation is due. Keep your final reading and tell the old supplier how to contact you if you’ve moved.

What I’d do first

Download the bill, check the reading date and decide how much credit you’d be comfortable leaving for winter. Use my Bills & Renewal Dashboard to track the follow-up, or grab the free 7-Day Financial Reset Kit. Once the refund arrives, use my sinking funds guide to put it towards a known bill, or start with what to do if you can’t pay your bills if essentials are already overdue.

Energy credit refund FAQs

Can I ask for a refund if I have a smart meter?

Yes. Check the bill uses an actual reading and ask your supplier to investigate if the bill still shows estimates.

Will my Direct Debit go up after a refund?

It depends on the supplier’s forecast and how much credit remains. Ask for the figures behind any proposed change before budgeting for the new payment.

How long does an energy credit refund take?

For an open account, ask the supplier to confirm when an approved refund should arrive. A separate 10-working-day standard applies to outstanding credit after a final or corrected final bill where the Great Britain regulations apply.
