Can you sell on Etsy in the UK?
Etsy is open to UK sellers, but it is not a general marketplace for anything you happen to own. Before opening a shop, check that what you plan to sell fits Etsy’s current Creativity Standards. Etsy groups eligible items around things made by a seller, designed by a seller, handpicked by a seller, or sourced by a seller.
That distinction matters. A mass-produced item cannot simply be relabelled as handmade. Original designs can be produced by a disclosed production partner, and original digital products can qualify. Etsy also permits seller-prompted AI creations under its current rules, but the use of AI must be disclosed in the listing. AI prompt bundles themselves are not treated as seller-designed items under the current Creativity Standards.
What can you sell?
- Items you make yourself, including work made with hand-guided or computerised tools.
- Your own original designs sold as digital downloads.
- Your own original designs manufactured by a disclosed production partner, including qualifying print-on-demand products.
- Vintage items that meet Etsy’s current minimum age requirement of at least 20 years.
- Qualifying craft and party supplies and certain buyer-personalised items.
Always check Etsy’s current prohibited-items rules before investing in stock. Eligibility is a better first question than “will this sell?”
Before you open the shop: prepare these basics
- A clear product idea that fits Etsy’s rules.
- Several good photographs or compliant mock-ups/images where Etsy permits them.
- A shop name and simple brand identity.
- Prices that account for Etsy fees, materials, packaging, postage and your time.
- Your identity, bank and payment information required by Etsy’s onboarding flow.
- A realistic processing time and shipping plan.
Do not assume every new shop pays exactly the same one-off setup amount. Etsy may show an onboarding/setup fee to some new shops, and the amount can vary. Treat the amount shown during your own signup as authoritative.
How to open your Etsy shop
- Create or sign in to an Etsy account and start the sell-on-Etsy setup.
- Choose the shop preferences requested in the onboarding flow.
- Choose a shop name that is available and appropriate for what you sell.
- Complete identity, payment and bank verification requested for your account.
- Create the first listing with accurate product information.
- Review fees and billing details shown before opening the shop.
- Publish only after checking the listing as a buyer would see it.
Build your first listing for a human, not an algorithm
Your listing needs to explain quickly what the product is, who it is for and what the buyer will receive. Etsy’s 2026 title guidance moved away from keyword-stuffed titles. Etsy says search now takes a more holistic view of the listing, including titles, tags, attributes, descriptions, the first photo and reviews.
Use a clear title led by the words that best describe the item. Complete the most specific category and all genuinely relevant attributes. Use the available tags to cover useful buyer language without repeating the same phrase mechanically.
For physical products, photographs should make condition, colour, scale and important details easy to understand. If a production partner is used, disclose it as Etsy requires. If AI was used to create the item, follow Etsy’s disclosure rule.
How should a beginner price an Etsy product?
Start with costs, not with a competitor’s price. Add the product/material cost, packaging, postage you will absorb, Etsy fees and any other genuine business cost. Then decide what margin compensates you for the work and risk involved.
Because Etsy has several fee types, the price shown to the buyer is not the same as the amount you keep. See our companion article, Etsy Fees & Tax UK: What Sellers Actually Pay, before setting prices.
What happens when you receive your first order?
- Check the order details and personalisation carefully.
- Make or prepare exactly what the listing promised.
- Package it appropriately.
- Use the shipping method and processing time promised to the buyer.
- Add tracking where applicable and retain dispatch evidence.
- Keep order communication on Etsy where possible.
- Check the payment account rather than assuming the full sale price is immediately withdrawable.
New shops can encounter payment-account verification or reserves/delays depending on Etsy’s current risk and payment rules. Do not build a cash-flow plan that assumes every pound from a new order is instantly available.
Is Etsy worth it for a UK beginner?
Etsy gives a new seller access to an established marketplace and buyers already searching for creative products. The trade-off is competition, marketplace rules and multiple seller fees. It is most useful when your product genuinely fits Etsy and you can create a differentiated listing; it is less attractive when the only plan is to copy a saturated product and compete on price.
Treat Etsy as a sales channel, not guaranteed passive income. A good product can still fail to get clicks, and a listing with traffic can still fail to convert. Our Etsy SEO UK guide explains how to diagnose those different problems.
A brief UK tax note
HMRC says you are probably trading if you make goods, including hobby-made items, with the intention of selling them. Relevant trading income is considered across activities. If total trading income is more than the £1,000 trading allowance for the tax year, HMRC says you need to tell them about it. This is based on gross income, not simply the profit left after Etsy fees.

FAQs
Do I need to be a business before selling on Etsy UK?
Opening an Etsy shop and UK tax status are separate questions. Whether HMRC treats your activity as trading depends on what you are doing and your income; check current HMRC guidance rather than assuming an Etsy account alone decides it.
Can I sell print-on-demand products on Etsy?
Yes, where the product is based on your original design and complies with Etsy’s Creativity Standards. The production partner must be disclosed.
Can I sell AI-generated art on Etsy?
Etsy currently permits seller-prompted AI creations under its Creativity Standards, with disclosure of AI use. Etsy does not currently treat AI prompt bundles as qualifying seller-designed items.
How old does an Etsy vintage item need to be?
Etsy’s current UK help guidance says vintage items must be at least 20 years old.
