You want your own shop for digital downloads, but the setup can feel bigger than the product. Do you need a delivery app? Why is the checkout asking about shipping? And what will the shop cost before you’ve made a sale?
We’ll work through those decisions one at a time, so you can set up a product, check how the customer receives it and decide whether the running costs make sense. You’ll know what to test before sending anyone to your shop.
Start with one download. Keep the finished file and its software requirements handy. There’s no need to prepare a large collection before checking that the first product works.

How to set up a digital product on Shopify
- Prepare a tested product. Decide whether the buyer gets a finished file, an editable template or access to another resource. Check rights before uploading.
- Choose a suitable store plan. Compare the features and ongoing price, not only the introductory offer. Confirm availability for your account.
- Create a clear product listing. Explain what is included, the format, any software required and whether anything physical is supplied.
- Configure digital delivery. Shopify documents its Digital Products app for attaching files or supported links. Set the appropriate delivery and access options and remove physical shipping for digital-only products.
- Complete business and tax checks. Confirm your seller information, payment setup, policies and the markets you are ready to serve. Do not treat a tax setting as advice about whether you need registration.
- Test before promotion. Use the appropriate test process for your payment setup. Check confirmation messages, access permissions, the downloaded file and what happens if a buyer needs help.
- Keep version and sales records. Record the product delivered, changes, fees and refunds where applicable. Review access settings carefully when updating an existing product.
Start with one working listing rather than a large untested catalogue. For original design and Canva licensing, see our Canva digital-products guide.

Your questions about running a digital-download shop
1. Do digital products sell well on Shopify?
A suitable product can sell, but opening a store does not establish demand or bring an automatic audience. You need a useful offer, accurate previews, reliable delivery and a route to customers. Judge your own conversion and net returns rather than applying another seller’s results to your store.
2. How do I create digital products to sell on Shopify?
Begin with a specific customer problem and original content you have the rights to sell. Create and test the actual file, prepare a clear product page and configure digital delivery. Then verify the customer journey before promoting it. Our Canva digital-products guide covers the creation and licensing stage.
3. What are the top five digital products to sell?
Five categories to research are original templates, ebooks, printable resources, audio files and educational materials within your competence. They are possible categories, not a verified highest-selling ranking. Select the format around the customer’s need and check rights, accessibility and any specialised advice before selling.
4. What is the hottest product to sell online?
There is no single verified winner in the sources checked for this guide. Search volume or an attractive competitor listing does not show your likely profit. Research a specific audience, identify a problem and test a small product. Compare demand with creation time, support needs and your costs before choosing.
5. What is the easiest digital product to make and sell?
A small original product in a subject you understand is usually easier to finish and verify than a large course or complex template. For example, test a simple planning sheet with its intended user. Ease of creation does not guarantee sales. Avoid copying someone else’s design or selling a file you have not opened and tested.
6. What are the best digital products to sell in 2026?
Choose based on evidence for your audience rather than the year in a headline. A good candidate solves a recurring problem, is straightforward to deliver and has a price that covers its costs. The ideas in this guide are starting points for research; we have not measured a live market-wide bestseller ranking.
7. How much does Shopify cost a month in the UK?
The checked UK pricing page lists Basic at £25 a month when paid monthly, or £19 a month billed yearly. Annual billing is a commitment, not the same as a £19 monthly cancellable payment. Introductory offers can change. Add payment processing, apps, domains and any other costs relevant to your setup, and check VAT treatment on the actual bill.
8. Can I sell digital products on Shopify for free?
A free digital-delivery app is separate from the cost of a store plan. Check the regular subscription after any trial or introductory offer and account for payment fees. If you want to test without a monthly platform subscription, compare other services’ per-sale costs before choosing. Free signup is not the same as a cost-free business.
9. Can I sell digital products on the Shopify Starter plan?
Shopify’s current Starter help page says the plan is not available to new stores. If you already have it, check your actual app compatibility and delivery requirements before changing plans; the help page says you cannot revert after leaving. Do not follow an old tutorial that assumes every beginner can choose Starter today.
10. Which digital download app is best for Shopify?
Start by checking whether Shopify’s own Digital Products app meets your needs. Compare file delivery, supported links, access limits, customer emails and support with alternatives. There is no universal best app for every product. Test the precise buyer experience and check the app’s pricing before adding a paid dependency.
11. Does HMRC check Shopify?
Do not assume an online store is invisible to HMRC or that you only need to report income after a platform contacts you. Your tax obligations depend on your activity and circumstances. Selling your own products through your own website is different from operating a marketplace for other sellers under platform-reporting rules. Keep records and check your own obligations rather than relying on an automatic-reporting rumour.
12. Do I need to be VAT registered to sell on Shopify?
For a UK-established business, using Shopify alone does not require UK VAT registration. Compulsory registration generally applies when taxable turnover exceeds £90,000 over a rolling 12 months, or you expect to exceed £90,000 in the next 30 days alone. Other circumstances can apply, including overseas rules. Digital sales to customers outside the UK need separate consideration; the domestic threshold is not a worldwide exemption.
13. How much tax do you pay on Shopify?
There is no single ‘Shopify tax’ rate. A sole trader’s Income Tax position depends on taxable profit and other income, with National Insurance potentially relevant. A company has a different framework, and VAT is separate again. Platform payment fees are business costs, not HMRC income tax. Use our side hustle tax calculator for estimates and check the reporting rules.
14. Do I need to set up a company to sell on Shopify?
You do not automatically need a limited company to sell as an individual. A sole trader is a possible structure, with record-keeping and reporting obligations. GOV.UK says gross trading income above £1,000 in a tax year generally requires registration for Self Assessment, with other reasons and exceptions to consider. Read our sole trader registration guide before choosing your structure.
15. Does Shopify handle all my VAT for digital products?
Do not assume so. Tax calculations and checkout settings do not, by themselves, establish registration, filing or payment of every tax obligation. HMRC says qualifying cross-border digital services can be taxed where the consumer is located. Check which responsibilities remain yours and get suitable advice before opening sales to additional markets.
16. What are the downsides of using Shopify?
Recurring costs can continue without sales. You need to attract customers, maintain the store, handle support and keep delivery and tax settings correct. Apps can add complexity or fees. Compared with a marketplace, you may have more control over the customer experience but also more responsibility for making that experience work.
17. Is Shopify worth it for a UK digital-product beginner?
It can be worth considering when the store features solve a real need and expected contribution can cover fixed costs. Example only: if a sale leaves £5 after variable costs and fixed monthly costs are £30, six sales cover those fixed costs before other overheads or tax. The figures are illustrative, not a Shopify fee quote or a sales forecast.
18. Can I use Canva to make the products?
Yes, as part of an appropriately licensed original design workflow. Check whether you are supplying a finished file or an editable template, and test the actual buyer access. Canva’s licence and the selling platform’s terms both matter. Our Canva and ChatGPT guide explains template restrictions, originality and platform differences.
Check these before paying for more store features
Write down your regular store costs and the amount each sale could contribute after selling costs. Then test one product from its page through to delivery. If either the costs or the file delivery still feels unclear, resolve that before adding apps, designs or more products.
If you are still testing your first idea, compare costs and customer access before committing to a store. If you already have a useful product and a way to reach buyers, focus on one accurate listing and reliable delivery. Keep the customer’s experience simple and test it yourself.
