The adoption or purchase price is only the start. Build a lifetime budget from your own quotes for food, insurance, routine care and time away, with an optional emergency reserve.
How I would use this result
Start with a recent payslip, bill, statement or written quote. Replace the example amounts, change one assumption at a time, then check whether the difference would affect your household budget. Keep the assumptions beside the result so you can revisit the comparison when circumstances change.
How the calculation works
Annualise monthly food and insurance, add annual care costs and increase recurring spending by your chosen yearly percentage. Add initial costs and the reserve separately. The reserve is planned cash, not a prediction of a vet bill.
Example: check the calculation
At £40 a month, food alone is £480 in the first year. The year-by-year table shows how your chosen inflation assumption changes later years.
Before relying on the result
Defaults are illustrative amounts, not market averages or quotes. Lifespan, breed, health, insurance exclusions and age-related premiums vary. One common inflation assumption cannot predict future premium changes. The monthly figure spreads total planned cost evenly; actual payments will be uneven.
Your questions answered
Are the starting figures average UK pet costs?
No. Replace them with your own quotes and the needs of the animal.
Does insurance remove the need for a reserve?
Not necessarily. Excesses, exclusions and upfront payment requirements differ.
Can I use it for another animal?
Yes, if you replace the lifespan and all costs with suitable figures.
