How I Saved £400 on My Car Insurance Renewal (UK Guide)

Car on a UK road representing car insurance renewal and quote comparison

Last updated: October 2026 · This is my own experience. Car insurance prices depend on you, your car and where you live, so your saving will be different.

When my car insurance renewal letter arrived, the new price was £900. It was from the same insurer, for the same car. I could easily have let it auto-renew. Instead, I spent an evening on comparison sites and found a different insurer for £400 less. That’s £400 back in my pocket for about an hour’s work.

Here’s exactly what happened, why renewal prices are often higher than they need to be, the best time to compare, and the tips that can bring your premium down.

What happened with my car insurance

We bought a new car, worth about £24,000. In the first year, the insurance cost me about £1,000. New cars can be pricier to insure, so I wasn’t too surprised.

About a month before the policy was due to renew, the insurer sent me a renewal letter. The quote for year two was £900. It was a bit cheaper than year one, so lots of people would think, “That’s fine,” and let it renew.

But I’ve learned that the renewal letter is my cue to shop around. I checked MoneySuperMarket and other comparison sites, and a different insurer came up for about £400 less than my renewal quote. Same car, just a much better price.

Why your renewal quote isn’t always the best price

Since 1 January 2022, FCA rules say your insurer can’t charge you more to renew than it would charge a new customer for the same policy through the same channel. That ended the worst of the “loyalty penalty”.

But it doesn’t mean your renewal price is the cheapest price out there. Other insurers may be cheaper for you. Prices through comparison sites can be different from buying direct. And your own details change: your no-claims discount grows, your car gets older and loses value, and the market moves. The only way to know is to compare.

When is the best time to renew car insurance?

Don’t wait until the day before. Prices tend to go up as your renewal date gets closer, because insurers see last-minute buyers as higher risk.

  • MoneySavingExpert’s 2026 analysis of MoneySupermarket quotes found the cheapest time was 22 to 26 days before renewal, with average prices close to half of those bought on renewal day.
  • Which? found a similar pattern in Go.Compare data: 26 days before was cheapest, and buying on the renewal day cost about 28% more.

That’s why the renewal letter, which usually arrives about a month before, is perfect timing. When it lands, it is a useful reminder to set aside time that week to compare.

My car insurance renewal routine (step by step)

1. Open the renewal letter straight away

Note the new price, your renewal date, and whether it will auto-renew. Write down what’s included: the excess, a courtesy car, windscreen cover, legal cover and any protected no-claims discount.

2. Get quotes about 3 to 4 weeks before renewal

If you’ve used a comparison site before, look out for its email about a month before your renewal. It comes with fresh quotes already worked out, so you don’t have to fill in all your details again. That makes this step really quick. Then check two or three comparison sites, because they don’t all show the same insurers. Some insurers aren’t on comparison sites at all, so it’s worth checking one or two directly as well.

3. Compare like for like

A cheaper quote isn’t a saving if the cover is worse. Check:

  • Excess: the compulsory and voluntary amount you’d pay if you claim
  • Courtesy car and breakdown cover
  • Windscreen cover and its excess
  • No-claims protection
  • Cover for other drivers and driving abroad

4. Call your current insurer (optional)

If you’d rather stay, tell them the cheaper quote you’ve found and ask whether they can do better. Sometimes they will. If not, switching is simple.

5. Switch, and stop the auto-renewal

Buy the new policy to start on your renewal date. Then contact your old insurer to cancel the auto-renewal, so you don’t end up with two policies. Since 2022, insurers have to make it easier to cancel auto-renewal.

6. Put next year’s reminder in your calendar

Set a reminder for about four weeks before your next renewal, in case the letter gets lost.

Tips that can lower your car insurance

Add a named driver (honestly)

Adding my husband to our policy as a named driver has sometimes brought the price down. Adding an experienced driver with a good record can lower the risk in an insurer’s eyes. It doesn’t always work, so try quotes with and without.

One important warning: the main driver must be the person who drives the car most. Putting a more experienced person down as the main driver when they aren’t is called fronting. It’s a form of insurance fraud, and it can make your policy invalid.

Pay annually if you can

Paying monthly usually means paying interest. If you can afford to pay the year in one go, it’s normally cheaper. A sinking fund for car insurance makes this much easier.

Be accurate about your mileage

If you work from home now or drive less, update your estimated mileage. Don’t underestimate, though: it must be honest.

Check your job title

Some job descriptions can be described in more than one accurate way, and the price can change. Only use titles that genuinely describe what you do.

Think about your excess

A higher voluntary excess can lower your premium, but only choose an amount you could actually pay if you needed to claim. Your emergency fund helps here.

Park safely and add security

Telling your insurer you park on a driveway or in a garage, or have an approved alarm or tracker, can help, if it’s true.

Use cashback

Cashback sites sometimes pay cashback when you buy insurance through them or through a comparison site. Check before you buy, and make sure the price is still the cheapest.

Should you ever auto-renew?

Auto-renewal is handy, because it can reduce the risk of an accidental gap in cover. But treat the renewal price as a quote, not a final bill. If you’ve compared and your insurer is still the best value, letting it renew is fine. Just compare first.

Car insurance renewal: FAQs (UK)

How far in advance should I renew my car insurance?

Comparison site data suggests around 22 to 26 days before your renewal date is often cheapest. Renewing on the last day usually costs more.

Is it cheaper to buy car insurance through a comparison site?

It can be. In my case, a comparison site found a different insurer about £400 cheaper than my renewal quote. Comparison sites show you lots of insurers at once, so it’s the quickest way to see if you’re overpaying.

Does adding my partner as a named driver make insurance cheaper?

Sometimes. Adding an experienced driver with a clean record can lower the price, but not always. Get quotes both ways, and never list someone as the main driver if they’re not.

Can my insurer charge me more for being loyal?

Since January 2022, FCA rules say your renewal price can’t be higher than a new customer would pay for the same policy through the same channel. Other insurers may still be cheaper.

Do I need to cancel my old policy if I switch?

Yes. Contact your old insurer to stop the auto-renewal, so you don’t pay for two policies.
