Winter Fuel Payment 2026: Clawback, Opt-Out & Who Gets £300

Winter Fuel Payment 2026 is £200 or £300, paid Nov–Dec. Income over £35,000? HMRC claws it back via your tax code. Opt-out dates, eligibility and what.

Where this guide applies: Winter Fuel Payment rules here cover England and Wales. Scotland has Pension Age Winter Heating Payment; Northern Ireland administers Winter Fuel Payment separately. Check your nation’s official guidance.

Quick answer: eligible people in England and Wales can receive Winter Fuel Payment for 2026/27 if born on or before 27 June 1960 and meeting the other conditions. Payments depend on age and living arrangements and can be up to £300; shared households may receive split amounts. Most eligible people are paid automatically in November or December. HMRC recovers the payment if your own total income exceeds £35,000. Opting out for 2026/27 has closed; the 2027/28 opt-out opens on 21 December 2026.

“Winter fuel payment clawback” is one of the biggest money searches in the UK right now, and I’m not surprised. This is only the second winter of the new rules, and lots of people are getting tax code letters they don’t understand. Here’s what’s happening, in plain English.

When will I get my Winter Fuel Payment?

Most people get a letter in October or November saying how much they’ll get, and the money arrives in November or December 2026. You don’t need to claim if you get the State Pension or another social security benefit (check the official list of qualifying benefits, which includes Universal Credit).

You may need to claim if you don’t get any of those benefits and you’ve never had a Winter Fuel Payment, or if you’ve deferred your State Pension since your last one. Postal claims opened on 21 September 2026 and phone claims on 19 October 2026. The claim deadline is 31 March 2027. Check the official claim guidance or call the Winter Fuel Payment Centre on 0800 731 0160 (Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm). That’s the “one phone call” in the headlines.

Winter Fuel Payment clawback 2026: how HMRC takes it back

If your own total income for the tax year is over £35,000, HMRC takes the payment back. Your partner’s income doesn’t count. Each person is assessed separately. Here’s how it works (GOV.UK):

  • If you pay tax through PAYE (a workplace or private pension, or a job), HMRC changes your tax code so a bit more tax comes off each month. For the 2025 payment, this started in April 2026. A £200 payment works out at about £17 a month (CIOT).
  • Two at once: GOV.UK says that if your 2025 payment is still being collected, your code will change again in January 2027 to start collecting the 2026 one. So you could see more tax taken for a few months. This is the “double clawback” people are worried about.
  • If you do Self Assessment, it’s added to your tax bill as a “Winter Fuel Payment charge”. Online returns usually include it automatically, but check it’s there. On a paper return (due 31 October 2026), you must add it yourself.

Missed the deadline? Don’t worry. You’ll still get the payment, and HMRC takes it back through your tax. Keep the money available if you expect the full charge to apply. If you’d rather not get it, put a reminder in your diary for 21 December to opt out of next winter’s.

Opted out before but now earn less? If your income for 2026/27 will be £35,000 or under, you can opt back in by contacting the Winter Fuel Payment Centre before 31 March 2027. An earlier opt-out carries on until you do.

Is the Winter Fuel Payment taxable?

Not in the usual sense. It doesn’t count as taxable income, and it doesn’t push you into a higher tax band. But if your income is over £35,000, the whole payment is taken back as a separate charge. It isn’t tapered: £35,001 of income means you repay all of it.

What I’d check this week

  1. Open your letter when it arrives and check the amount matches the table above.
  2. Estimate your income for 2026/27 (pensions, earnings, savings interest, rental income, before tax). HMRC has a free checker linked from the GOV.UK page.
  3. Check your tax code in the HMRC app or your personal tax account. If it’s been changed for the Winter Fuel Payment but your income is under £35,000, contact HMRC.
  4. Self Assessment? Make sure the charge is on your return, especially if you file on paper by 31 October.
  5. Watch out for scams. Do not trust unsolicited links asking you to claim. HMRC may email or write about a tax-code change; check it independently through your account. Never click a link asking for bank details. If unsure, call 0800 731 0160.

Winter Fuel Payment FAQs

My partner earns over £35,000, but I don’t. Do I keep mine?

Yes. It’s based on each person’s own income, so your partner’s earnings don’t affect yours.

Do I need to do anything to pay it back?

Usually no. HMRC adjusts your tax code automatically. If you do Self Assessment, it goes on your return.

I haven’t got my letter yet. Should I worry?

Not yet. Letters go out in October and November. If nothing has arrived by the end of December and you think you qualify, call the Winter Fuel Payment Centre.

Is there other help with heating this winter?

Yes. If you’re on certain benefits, In England, Wales and Northern Ireland, Cold Weather Payments of £25 can be paid for qualifying periods of seven consecutive days averaging 0°C or below from 1 November to 31 March. Scotland has Winter Heating Payment instead. I’ve listed these and other dates in my November 2026 DWP payment dates guide.

What to do next

If your income is under £35,000, the Winter Fuel Payment is yours to keep, so just look out for the letter. If it’s over, you’ll get it and quietly pay it back through your tax code. That’s annoying, but not a disaster. The two dates to remember are 31 March 2027 (opt back in for this winter) and 21 December 2026 (opt out of next winter).
