Warm Home Discount 2026/27: Who Gets £150 Off Energy Bills

The £150 Warm Home Discount for winter 2026/27: who qualifies, the 23 August date that matters, when it's paid and what to do if you get a letter. UK.

Quick answer: the Warm Home Discount is a one-off £150 off your electricity bill for winter 2026/27. In England and Wales, you usually qualify if on 23 August 2026 you got a means-tested benefit, such as Pension Credit, Universal Credit, Housing Benefit or income-related ESA, and your name (or your partner’s) was on the electricity bill. Most people get it automatically between October 2026 and 31 March 2027. If you get a letter asking you to call the helpline, do it by 26 February 2027.

“£150 off energy bills” is one of the fastest-rising money searches right now, as letters start landing on doormats. It’s one of the simplest bits of help to get, because most people don’t have to apply at all. But there are a few catches that stop people getting it, so here’s the plain-English version.

What is the Warm Home Discount?

It’s a one-off £150 discount off your electricity bill, paid by your energy supplier. It isn’t paid to your bank account. If your supplier gives you both gas and electricity, you may be able to have it on your gas bill instead, so ask them. It doesn’t affect your Winter Fuel Payment or Cold Weather Payments (GOV.UK).

Who qualifies in England and Wales?

On the qualifying date, 23 August 2026, you needed to:

  1. Get a qualifying means-tested benefit: Pension Credit (Guarantee or Savings Credit), Universal Credit, Housing Benefit, income-related ESA.
  2. Be named on the electricity bill, either you, your partner (as DWP knows them), or your legal representative.
  3. Be with a participating energy supplier. Most big suppliers take part.

Eligibility depends on the type of property and electricity supply; care homes and caravans can fall outside the core scheme. Park home residents apply separately through Charis Grants (GOV.UK eligibility statement).

Scotland and Northern Ireland

  • Scotland: automatic eligibility covers Pension Credit and certain other benefit circumstances. If you are outside the automatic group, apply to your supplier if its broader-group criteria fit. Read the official Scottish rules. Check your supplier’s current eligibility rules and application dates; places can be limited, so apply promptly if eligible.
  • Northern Ireland: the scheme doesn’t run there. Look at the Affordable Warmth scheme instead.

I’ve had a Warm Home Discount letter. What now?

  • If it says you’ll get it automatically: you don’t need to do anything. Watch for the credit on your bill.
  • If it asks you to call: it means the government couldn’t confirm everything, often because your name doesn’t match your energy account or they couldn’t match your supplier. Call the number printed on your letter by 26 February 2027.
  • Is the letter genuine? The official Warm Home Discount helpline is 0800 030 9322. Never give bank details to anyone who contacts you out of the blue about the £150.

Prepayment meters

You can still get it. On a smart prepay meter, the £150 is usually added as credit. On a traditional key or card meter, you’ll usually get a voucher by post, text or email to redeem at a Post Office or PayPoint. Use it within the time limit (as stated on your voucher) and take photo ID. If you lose it, your supplier can reissue it.

Moved home or switched supplier?

The supplier you were with on 23 August 2026 is the one responsible for paying it, even if you’ve switched since. If you’ve moved, contact the helpline so they can sort it out.

Why people miss out

  • The bill is in someone else’s name, such as a landlord or an adult child.
  • They ignored the letter, thinking it was a scam. Check it against the official helpline number above.
  • They’re eligible for Pension Credit but haven’t claimed it. Pension Credit unlocks the Warm Home Discount and lots more help. Check with the Pension Credit calculator.

Other help with energy bills this winter

  • Winter Fuel Payment: Up to £300 for eligible people born on or before 27 June 1960. See my Winter Fuel Payment 2026 guide.
  • Cold Weather Payments: £25 for each very cold week, from 1 November, for people on certain benefits.
  • Temporary 0% VAT on qualifying domestic electricity in Great Britain from 1 October 2026 to 31 March 2027. Gas and domestic electricity in Northern Ireland remain at 5%.
  • Your supplier’s hardship fund: most big suppliers have one, so ask if you’re struggling.

Warm Home Discount FAQs

Do I need to apply for the Warm Home Discount?

In England and Wales, usually not. It’s automatic if the government can match you. In Scotland, people in the Broader Group must apply to their supplier.

Can I get it if I’m on Universal Credit and working?

In England and Wales, Universal Credit is a qualifying benefit, so yes, as long as you were getting it on 23 August 2026 and you’re named on the electricity bill.

Is the Warm Home Discount paid in cash?

No. It comes off your electricity bill (or as a voucher for traditional prepay meters). Park home residents are the exception and are paid by bank transfer.

What to do next

If you’re on a means-tested benefit, look out for your letter and check your bill for the £150 by the end of March. If you’re a pensioner on a low income who isn’t claiming Pension Credit, check that first. It’s the key that unlocks this and much more. More free help is in my free money help guide.
